The Moths are a spacefaring people through and through, with the Grand Nomad Fleet having served as their home for centuries. Occasionally, in search of a new life, or in search of money to send home to the Fleet, mothpeople journey beyond its confines and seek work alongside the other species of the galaxy, including humankind- and this is how they found their way into the workforce of Nanotrasen. Hardworking and technically skilled (as a result of their home environment), the Moths are a useful addition to the company- although this has not spared them the racism often targeted at non-humans.

Mothpeople first met Humankind around 150 years ago, during a period of unprecedented expansion that saw humanity finding that not only were they not alone in the universe, but that they were ''far'' from alone. During this period the Moths were rather hostile to the newcomers to the galactic stage, and most early human encounters with them would result in piracy and violence. Since then the tensions have calmed significantly, and Moths are amongst the most accepted of the alien species of the galaxy.
